I first had the pleasure of photographing Riley’s family at a beautiful Mavericks House wedding — so when Christina and Riley reached out to book their own San Francisco engagement session, I was beyond honored. They had one request: capture the city neighborhood that shaped the early days of their relationship. As a photographer who usually works among the redwoods and rolling hills of the Bay Area, I was genuinely excited to explore an urban setting. We started the session at The Coffee Movement in Nob Hill — cappuccinos in hand, golden-hour light bouncing off the city streets. From there, we wandered over to Ina Coolbrith Park, one of Nob Hill’s most charming hidden gems, where we spotted the famous wild parrots of Telegraph Hill making their rounds. The neighborhood’s classic San Francisco architecture — cable car lines, steep stairways, and painted Victorians made for a stunning backdrop at every turn. We toasted with a bottle of bubbly just as the sun dipped behind the skyline (navigating a little extra Lunar New Year traffic along the way — totally worth it). The light during golden hour in Nob Hill is something else. Christina and Riley, I can’t wait to celebrate your fall wedding at Brasswood Bar + Kitchen in St. Helena. Wine country, here we come! San Francisco is one of the most photographically stunning cities in the world — and if you’re getting married in the Bay Area, your engagement session here will set the tone for everything that follows. From the fog-draped hills of Nob Hill to the waterfront magic of the Embarcadero, San Francisco offers engaged couples an almost unfair variety of backdrops — all within a few square miles. Whether you envision champagne on a hilltop at golden hour, a quiet morning stroll through a hidden neighborhood park, or the electric energy of the city streets, SF delivers. As a Bay Area couples photographer who has photographed engagement sessions across San Francisco and beyond, I’ve put together this complete guide to help you plan a session you’ll look back on for decades.01 /Why San Francisco Is Perfect for Engagement Photos There’s a reason engaged couples travel from across the country to photograph in San Francisco. The city offers something rare: genuine visual variety packed tightly together. In a single two-hour session, you can move from cobblestone alleyways to panoramic hilltop views to waterfront reflections — all without ever getting in a car. San Francisco’s famous Karl the Fog isn’t just a local mascot — it’s a photographer’s secret weapon. Overcast mornings create soft, diffused light that flatters every skin tone and eliminates harsh shadows. And when the fog burns off and golden hour hits the city skyline? That’s when the real magic happens. For couples planning a Bay Area wedding, an engagement session in SF also gives you the chance to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day — in a setting that feels meaningful to your story.02 /Best San Francisco Engagement Session LocationsHere are my most-recommended spots for San Francisco engagement photos, organized by vibe:CLASSIC & ROMANTIC Nob Hill ICONIC SF Cable cars, Victorian architecture, and the gorgeous Grace Cathedral steps. Huntington Park is a hidden gem for quieter moments. The neighborhood’s textures and light are unmatched. Alamo Square PAINTED LADIES The famous Painted Ladies row houses with the downtown skyline behind them. Best photographed early morning before the tourists arrive. Palace of Fine Arts ARCHITECTURAL Roman-inspired rotunda reflected in a lagoon, surrounded by eucalyptus trees. One of SF’s most dramatic architectural backdrops. Embarcadero & Ferry Building WATERFRONT Bay Bridge views, the farmer’s market, and beautiful industrial textures. A perfect blend of city energy and waterfront calm. HIDDEN & INTIMATEFilbert Street Steps SECRET GARDEN A wild garden staircase tumbling down Telegraph Hill — and yes, the wild parrots really do show up. Utterly unique to San Francisco. Bernal Heights PANORAMIC VIEWS A neighborhood hilltop park with 360° city views and far fewer crowds than Twin Peaks. Perfect for golden hour silhouettes. Lands End Trail COASTAL DRAMA Cliffside trails with Golden Gate Bridge views, crashing waves, and wild cypress trees. Moody, cinematic, and completely stunning. The Mission District URBAN & COLORFUL Vibrant murals, sunny microclimate, great coffee shops. If your relationship has an urban, creative energy, this is your neighborhood. San Francisco doesn’t need a filter. The city IS the filter. 03 / When to Schedule Your SF Engagement Session Timing is everything in San Francisco, where weather patterns are hyperlocal and change by the hour. Here’s a seasonal breakdown to help you plan: For timing within the day, I almost always recommend a golden hour session — starting 90 minutes before sunset. San Francisco’s western-facing hillsides catch warm, amber light that is simply impossible to replicate at any other time of day. Planning Tips for Couples Start somewhere meaningful. The best San Francisco engagement sessions begin at a spot that’s already part of your story — the coffee shop where you had your first date, the neighborhood where you used to walk together. Let the session grow outward from there. Dress for the city, not just the photos. Layers are essential in SF. A lightweight jacket or a linen blazer photographs beautifully AND keeps you warm if the fog rolls in. Avoid busy patterns; solid tones and textures photograph best against the city’s rich palette. Plan for movement. San Francisco is a city best experienced on foot. Build in 15–20 minutes of walking between locations — that relaxed, in-between time often produces the most natural, genuine photos of the session. Book well ahead of your wedding date. Ideally, schedule your SF engagement session 6–12 months before your wedding. This gives you time to use your photos for save-the-dates and lets you experience working with your photographer before the big day. Don’t fight the fog. If Karl rolls in on your session day, lean into it. Fog creates a dreamy, painterly quality that’s completely unique to San Francisco — and honestly, it might be your favorite photos from the whole set. From Engagement Session to Bay Area Wedding Many of my couples who book San Francisco engagement sessions are also planning their weddings nearby — from intimate Wine Country ceremonies in St. Helena and Napa Valley, to garden weddings in Marin, to ballroom affairs in the heart of the city itself. Your engagement session is more than just beautiful photos — it’s the first chapter of your visual love story. It’s where you learn to be in front of a camera together, where you figure out what you love (golden hour? city streets? wild coastlines?) and where I get to understand how you move, laugh, and look at each other. All of that makes your wedding day photography richer.
Whether you’re getting married at a Nob Hill venue, a Sonoma vineyard, or an event space in Hayes Valley, a San Francisco engagement session is the perfect beginning to your wedding photography journey in the Bay Area.Ready to plan your San Francisco engagement session? I’d love to hear about your story, your neighborhood, and what you’re dreaming up. Let’s make something beautiful together.
